Sometimes, our gentle customers ask us for API 6A product. But description is too simple that we cannot decide which material to choose, which test we should do. So we want to explain more in this article.
API 6A is specification for Wellhead and x-mass tree equipment which specify material chosen, NDT test adopted, hydro static test application, packing, and etc. We hope to get these detailed requests from customer’s request.
Some friends just call us for gate valve, 4-1/16” x 5000psi. And we need to ask for more information. For single valve, description is like below: SSV, 4-1/16” x 10,000psi, flanged end, DD, PU, PSL3, PR1. We can find that bore size is 4-1/16”, working pressure is 10,000psi. and end connection is flange. But what do DD, PU, PSL3 and PR1 mean?
DD is material class. There is 7 material class which include AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF, HH. AA to CC is for sweet service, DD to HH is from H2S service. And HH is the highest material request.
PU is temperature class. See below form.

PSL is production specification level, including PSL1, PSL2, PSL3, PSL3G, and PSL4. From PSL3G to PSL4, gas test is request. PSL level is mainly define manufacturing and fabrication specification.
PR is performance requirement, including PR1 and PR2. In simple words, PR2 valve can work under adverse environment for long time. And PR2 valve cost is much higher than PR1 valve.

NOTE: for dart & flapper check valve and plug valve, we have to do interchangeable with international company product. So size and connection type is following up FMC or SPM, but manufacturing and fabrication is following up API 6A or API 16C standar
